Paradoks metanowy w środowisku wodnym

Biological methane formation is considered an anaerobic process exclusive to methanogenic Archaea. As such, anoxia or oxygen depleted environments are commonly believed to be pre-requisite for biotic methanogenesis. Recent discovery of active methane production in oxygenated waters calls for re-examination of the global methane cycle: Who are the responsible organisms? What are the underlaying pathways? How does this methane source react to environmental perturbation? And, is this phenomenon of global importance?
