Anna Marszalik from the Department of Bacterial Physiology will give a seminar on Monday, November 15 at 2 pm, entitled: “Acinetobacter baumannii – the end is near? …”
When, at the end of the 1960s, the team of Paul and Linda Baumann finally characterized this common, saprophytic environmental bacterium, they probably did not foresee that nearly half a century later it would become one of the greatest threats in hospital wards. Today, A. baumannii is considered to be a highly dangerous opportunistic pathogen that is multi-drug resistant (MDR), extremely-drug resistant (XDR) or even pandrug resistant (PDR). Recently, its remarkable durability and survivability have led to its inclusion in the priority list of bacteria to be eradicated with the acronym ESKAPEE. These bacilli are easily incorporated into the human microbiota and, in favourable circumstances, lead to the development of extremely dangerous infections. One of the most common is ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), which affects an average of one in five ventilated patients, with mortality rates ranging from 24% to as high as 76%. Each year, A. baumannii infections cause around 15,000 deaths, and its increasing resistance to treatment makes finding an effective therapy absolutely crucial. The race is on. Whose end will be nearer?…
